Uses of a Dog Exercise Pen?
Some people might argue that a dog exercise pen is a type of cage and that animals shouldn’t be shut up. However, there are very good reasons to use a pen, which explains why so many people own one.
Much as we would all like to spend loads of time at home, playing with and exercising our pet dogs, the reality is that most of us have to go to work and have other work commitments. Many dogs, when left alone in the house, will then start barking at people passing by and destroying items of furniture. The dog can’t really be blamed as he is just exhibiting signs of boredom.
Dog exercise pens are large structures built in the back yard. Dogs enjoy being in their pen for several reasons. By being outside they can be in the fresh air with lots more smells and sights around them than if they are shut indoors. If you put a good selection of toys in with them then they will have lots to occupy them and the large space will give allow them to get some much needed exercise. Make sure that you give him a variety of different types: some to sit and chew, balls to run around with and maybe a toy filled with some sort of treat which they have to try and get out.
Start by only putting him in the pen for short periods while you are outside somewhere that he can see you. Then gradually increase the time and start spending some of it where he can’t see you. By taking this gentle approach you will reduce the likelihood of him developing separation anxiety. Also if you put a dog kennel in with him then he will have somewhere that he feels safe when he wants to relax.
