The History of Masquerade

Did you know that the first masquerade mask festival was held in 1268? It is amazing to think that this festival has been around for this long. The party has changed and shifted over the centuries. There were all sort of laws passed to keep the masqueraders from committing immoral acts. At one point a law was even passed forbidding the wearing of the masks unless it was at the festival! Breaking this law could mean 2 years in jail. There were even laws forbidding dancing outside of the carnival times. Gosh I can only imagine what these parties were like if these people were not allowed to cut loose all year. Fight for your right! These day it is much more liberal in Venice during the time of the Festival.
