Teaching in Asia continues to be one of the most lucrative places to teach English. Japan is one of the most popular destinations for travelers wanting to teach English. Teaching in Japan will either require you to have an undergraduate degree or extensive teaching experience in order to apply for a working visa. With these qualifications, you have the ability to make a significant amount of money.

Japan is one of the most technologically advanced, yet culturally rich societies in the world. This unique combination of new and old world characteristics makes this country a top destination choice for teaching abroad. Working in Japan gives you the opportunity to live in a very safe and fully-developed nation that is still rich in cultural heritage.

There are many teaching jobs available in Japan. You have the choice of working in a conversation school, as an assistant language teacher, or, if you are extremely qualified, you can work at a university. Most of the available jobs are in conversation schools. Jobs tend to be more in rural areas than in cities as this is where English teachers are most needed.

When teaching in Japan, the key is to be flexible. As an English teacher, you can work days or evenings depending on where you work. Conversation schools work in shifts, so you can work anytime during the day or evening. As an assistant language teacher, you will work side-by-side with a Japanese teacher in elementary or high schools. Work weeks are Monday to Friday and you will normally teach 30 hours a week. Classes will tend to be good sizes, with anywhere between 15 and 30 students.

Your monthly salary will be around $2,500 USD with about $500 USD going to monthly rent. Yes accommodations are left up to you to pay, and many landlords will require about two months in advance. This means you should come to Japan with some extra cash to keep you afloat until your pay checks start coming in.
