Let’s talk about a few terms first and then we will get into some details. Misting systems refer to those systems that have water-filled lines under pressure that spray this water by way of mist into the air. The lines can be rigid lines like harder PVC or metal or can be flexible plastic or vinyl lines. The misting nozzles are where the water is emitted. Some systems have additional pumps that pressurize the lines even more for greater efficiency. These pumps cause the atomized water – the water droplets that are emitted – to be even smaller.

So, now that we have a few terms discussed, we can get into function. The misting system is a very simple piece of equipment or pieces of equipment. One end has an ‘in’ for where the water fills the lines. This could be attached to a hose bib or have a dedicated plumbed line. Then, on the other end are the misting head nozzles. The lines are what carry the water from one end to the other. As the water is forced through the nozzles it becomes a mist. These atomized water droplets evaporate in the air causing a cooling effect. The smaller the droplets, the better the evaporative effect, thus, the benefit of having a pump.
