Music Journalism

As an aspiring music journalist, it’s hard to get your foot in the door – especially if you’re only experience in the music industry was the last time you bought a CD or played an instrument. Even though I went to an Ivy League school renowned for its journalism program and even though I graduated at the top of my class. I was turned down from the music page of every major newspaper from the New York Times to the Chicago Tribune – even the lowly Sun Sentinel denied me an interview.

After several rejection letters I was crushed; how would I ever get a job with The Rolling Stone if I couldn’t even get call back from the local Ft Lauderdale paper? The answer lay in the internet and a little known site known as Axel’s Guitar Blog. Axel took me on as his full time writer and blogger and before long, he even had me out on the road doing some real investigative journalism, obviously with an emphasis on the music scene. While it didn’t pay much, it was a start, and it helped me eventually land an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Next stop, with any luck, will be Rolling Stone.
