Global Macro Investing
While there are many different styles of trading and investing there are a few that have a dedicated following of people who have actually generated market beating returns consistently over the last several decades. Value investors like Warren Buffett have obviously been successful as a group as have private equity and venture capitalists. But who else has really done well over the last few decades and kept some of their returns?
Distressed investors have done well as they mostly avoided the crash and have been buying up distressed assets at rock bottom prices. But aside from them the only last large group of long term winners are the global macro investors. Global macro investing is the art of investing in all liquid asset classes and extracting alpha, or excess return, from each one.
By taking a top down view of the investment landscape macro investors are able to see opportunities that other investors that are stuck in their pigeonhole can’t see. So how has global macro done over the last 20 years or so? Well according to Tremont Advisors it is the most successful hedge fund strategy since they started their database. Not a bad deal since it wins on both returns and on minimal risk.
