Do You Need One Big Cupcake Stand, Or Multiple Small Ones?

With all of the choices that are available, shopping for a cupcake stand can be a daunting task.  There are a lot of different features to look at, like size, color, shape, and material.  One of the biggest problems that people run into is the decision between one really big stand, or multiple smaller stands.  In this post I hope to clear up this for you so that you can know that you are making the right decision when you are shopping for yours.

The first step is to figure out exactly how many cupcakes you are going to need.  Big parties take a lot of cupcakes, and I generally advise those that I work with directly to bake an extra 10 or 12% to cover those that get greedy, and to have a couple leftover for the party’s host.  Once you know how many you’re baking, you can start shopping for stands.

Tiered cupcake stands are always going to be the best choice since you can fit a lot into a small size.  These generally run anywhere between three and five tiers, but keep in mind that the taller it is, the more likely it is to tip over.  This is one of the biggest factors in deciding between smaller stands or one big one.  If you are going to have someone who is serving the cupcakes from the stand, go right ahead and get the huge one!  The problem that most parties run into is when the uncle that no one really likes has had a few too many glasses of wine and trips into the cupcake stand.  These stands are fairly sturdy on their own, and can deal with a breeze, but when someone bumps into it, it falls easily.  The last thing you want is to lose all of your hard work because of someone’s carelessness.

If you’re having someone serve for you, go with the big one.  If the guests are serving themselves, go with smaller ones to speed up service and to minimize your losses should someone bump into it.
