The small and typically green plastic toy army men that come in large sets (generally piled together en masse in a bucket or net bag) are some of the popular yet generic military soldier classics.  With the standard plastic army man resembling the American soldiers who sport the round old fashioned M1 steel helmet, a general game of battle is easy to achieve with different colored plastic soldier pieces to represent other sides of the conflict.

I do have to say though that the couple of Corolle dolls we have were chosen as favorites not only by my kids but also by their cousin who owned them previously.  I guess it is because they are pretty lifelike.  They end up getting dragged through all kinds of adventures.  In our case, they were free hand me downs, but they are pretty reasonably priced anyway.  If you are looking for a well made companion type of doll, I can definitely say that I know some kids who like them.

I went with her to a trading show or whatever they call them over a recent weekend.  I am not into the pin collecting thing at all, but I have to say that the people there were very nice and they acted like they were all in one big sorority or fraternity or something.  I walked around with my cousin and she traded some pins with people and then bought a few pins.  I even broke down and bought one just to remember the event.  I never realized that there were so many hardcore pin collectors out there.  It isn’t anything I’d want to do every weekend, but for a once in a while thing it was a nice day.
