Bug Zappers or Mosquito Traps

When you are looking for ways to eliminate the insect problem in your backyard or patio area, there a couple of options.  The most common style to control insects on your patio are those bug zappers.  These things look like black lights that have an electrical discharge mechanism that zaps the bugs that enter attracted to the light. They drop and you don’t have to worry about that one biting you at least. Or do you?  You see, there is more about those zappers than you might imagine.

More recent studies have shown that you might be better off investing in one of the mosquito traps that are specifically designed for the biting insects.  You see, the bug zapper has been shown to attract and zap moths and other harmful insects in much greater numbers than the mosquitoes and other biting insects you are really after.  The reason is that mosquitoes, specifically, are attracted to carbon dioxide, humidity and other pheromones.  The light is not particularly interesting to them.  However, the mosquito trap is almost too much for them to resist.

How it works is that it is powered by a propane tank which helps emit carbon dioxide, water vapor and some units, the mosquito pheromone mentioned.   This attracts the mosquitoes and when they are very close, they get sucked into the trap by way of the vacuum.  This device has been shown to kill many more mosquitoes than the bug zapper and is more effective over greater ranges.  Better technology, better mousetrap….er, mosquito trap.
