Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks
There is much debate over when the cuckoo clock was originally invented but one thing is clear: they came out of the Black Forest of Germany. The very first account of the cuckoo dates back to 1740. It was a clock made by Franz Ketterer. These Black Forest cuckoo clocks were an instant success and eventually became an industry top seller worldwide. Today there are about a hundred authorized producers in the Black Forest area. There is even the business of harvesting the Linden wood that the cuckoo clocks are made from. The need for this wood has become such a demand that business for the folks that harvest the wood work year round instead of the winter months they once worked. Popular makers include Schwab, Jaeger and Dold.
