Becoming a Bartender

The question that most people have about bartending for a living (when they’re first starting out) is if they should go to school for it. My own opinion is that it is better not to go to school. Instead, you should learn how to become a bartender in firsthand experience. You can even read some books that will teach you a bunch of fancy recipes, but still nothing compares to tending bar for your friends, family, or even actual patrons. There is just too much that must be learned on the job in this career. It is hard to translate the school knowledge into the actual bar with you, so why not just jump right into it? That is how most people throughout the ages have become a bartender.
