Advantages and Disadvantages of Pawn Shops and Cash Converters
If you watch TV regularly, you will no doubt have seen commercials appear from time to time offering “Cash for Gold” or “Cash for Valuables”. These commercials are for high street establishments like “Cash Converters”, which are essentially pawn shops or second-hand stores, where you can go along with your old jewelry or other unwanted goods that still retain some value, and swap those goods for instant cash.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to these places. The main advantages are those of speed and convenience. You can get cash quickly, by just taking along your trinkets (or musical instruments, power tools, consumer electronics items or whatever), having them instantly valued on the spot and exchanging them for cash in your pocket. The main disadvantage is that the valuation you get for your goods will be relatively low. If you sold the same things on eBay for example, you would no doubt get a much fairer price. But then you would have to wait for the auction to end to receive your money. And if you don’t have a PayPal account, it makes things even more difficult for you.
So Cash Converters, pawn shops and other second-hand goods dealers certainly have a place in the world and can provide a useful service if instant cash is what you are looking for.
It used to be the case that many second-hand goods stores and pawn shops were synonymous with handling stolen goods, but these days, that is very unusual. If a high street store was engaging in such nefarious activities, it would not stay in business very long with the kind of checks required these days.
Typically, if you are selling anything at one of these stores, you have to provide adequate ID to prove your identity. Cash Converters for example, requires three forms of identification, one of which must have your current address. This information is then stored on their database in case there is any question of the goods being stolen.
So in conclusion, if you need quick cash and you have some goods of value that you no longer need, you may want to consider your local high street secondhand dealer.
